Answer – Apomixis is the mechanism of seed production without involving the process of meiosis and syngamy. It plays an important role in hybrid seed production. The method of producing hybrid seeds by cultivation is very expensive for farmers. Also, by sowing hybrid seeds, it is difficult to maintain hybrid characters as characters segregate during meiosis. Apomixis prevents the loss of specific characters in the hybrid. Also, it is a cost-effective method for producing seeds.

16. What are the phases of the menstrual cycle? What happens if an egg is fertilized?
Answer – The menstrual cycle typically has four main phases:
1. Menstrual Phase – This is when bleeding occurs, lasting about 3-7 days. The body sheds the lining of the uterus.
2. Follicular Phase – This begins on the first day of menstruation and lasts until ovulation. During this time, the body produces hormones that help prepare eggs in the ovaries and build up the uterine lining.
3. Ovulation – Around the middle of the cycle, an egg is released from the ovary. This is the time when a person is most fertile.
4. Luteal Phase – After ovulation, the body produces hormones to prepare the uterus for a possible pregnancy. If the egg isn’t fertilized, hormone levels drop, leading to the start of a new menstrual cycle.
If an egg is fertilized by sperm, it travels to the uterus and implants into the uterine lining. This typically leads to pregnancy, and the menstrual cycle stops while the body supports the developing baby.

17. Describe the structure of human sperm with the help of labelled diagram.
Answer –

The sperm is the male gamete produced in the testes of the male reproductive system. It consists of three parts – head, middle piece and the tail. The sperm head is elongated and formed by the condensation of the nucleus. The anterior portion has a cap like structure called acrosome. It contains hyaluronidase, an enzyme that helps the sperm to enter the ovum during fertilization. A short neck connects the head and middle piece which comprises that centrioles. The middle piece contains the mitochondria which provides energy for the movement of the tail. It brings about sperm motility which is essential for fertilization.
