17. Describe the symbols used in the poem ‘Fire and Ice’ ?
Answer – ‘Fire’ is symbol of greed, desire, conflict and fury. ‘Ice’ symbolises hatred, coldness, insensitivity, indifference and rigidity.

19. Where in the classroom did Wanda sit and why ?
Answer – Wanda always sat on the seat next to the last seat, in the last row, in Room Thirteen. She used to sit there because her feet were normally caked with dry mud and very dirty. So in order to avoid being laughed at by her classmates, she always sits there to hide her dirty feet.

20. How does Mandela describe the scene of inauguration ceremony ?
Answer – Nelson Mandela says that the inauguration took place on 10th May. The day was bright and clear. Many world leaders and great personalities were present there. This ceremony was held to declare Nelson Mandela as the first black president of South Africa. He pledged to obey and uphold the Constitution. Finally the jets left off smoke of different colors of the new South African flag. The day was symbolized by the playing of two national anthems.

21. What is the central idea of ‘The Ball Poem’ ?
Answer – The central idea of the poem is ‘the sense of loss in life’. Loss is a fact of life. The sooner man learns to tolerate it, the better it is. When we lose something for the first time, we feel very sad. But later we learn to live with our loss. In this poem the boy loses his ball. He is very sad. The poet can buy him another ball. But he does not want to do so. He wants that the boy must learn the bitter truth of life that everyone can suffer the loss of something dear.

Answer – Lencho had firm faith in God. He believed that God sees everything, even what is deep in one’s conscience and helps everyone in one’s problems. He wrote a letter to God demanding a hundred pesos from him to sow his field again.


Give a brief character-sketch of Mrs. Matilda Loisel.
Answer – Mrs. Matilda Loisel is a beautiful and charming woman who is dissatisfied with her middle-class life. She dreams of luxury and wealth, and feels trapped by her modest social status. She is envious of those who have more than she does and longs to be part of the upper class. Despite her discontent, she is hardworking and devoted to her husband, and she is willing to make sacrifices for him. She is also proud and stubborn, refusing to accept her circumstances and always yearning for more. Her obsession with material possessions ultimately leads her down a path of ruin and regret.

23. As the student editor of your school magazine, write a report about the Independence Day Celebration in your school.

Independence Day Celebration at GSSS Badhra, (Charkhi Dadri) was a grand success. The event began with the hoisting of the national flag by the school Principal, followed by the national anthem. Students participated in various cultural activities, showcasing the diverse culture of our country. Speeches were delivered highlighting the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and the importance of patriotism. The celebration ended with sweets distribution to mark the occasion.
