(i) How did Abdul Kalam earn his first wages?
Answer – Abdul Kalam helped his cousin, who was a newspaper agent, by collecting bundles of newspapers thrown from a moving train during wartime. For this work, he was paid some money, which became his first earning.
(ii) Why was the holy man who gave Santosh’s mother his blessings surprised?
Answer – The holy man was surprised because in those days people preferred a son, but Santosh’s family wished for the birth of a daughter.
(iii) How did Saint Peter punish the selfish women?
Answer – Saint Peter cursed the selfish woman and changed her into a woodpecker, forcing her to bore trees all day for her food.
(iv) How does the poet show that no men are strange or foreign?
Answer – The poet shows that all human beings share the same earth, air, and needs. Therefore, no man is strange or foreign to another.

What is effective way of killing a tree in Gieve Patel’s poem?
Answer – According to the poet, merely cutting a tree is not enough. To kill it completely, it must be uprooted and left exposed so that its roots dry, harden, twist, and wither.

What are the precious things mentioned in the story “The Happy Prince”? Why are they precious?
Answer – In The Happy Prince, the most precious things are the leaden heart of the Happy Prince and the dead swallow. They are precious because they show selfless love and sacrifice for the poor, which is more valuable than gold or jewels.

Give a brief character sketch of the Happy Prince?
Answer – The Happy Prince was kind, compassionate, and selfless. After seeing the suffering of the poor, he sacrificed his ruby, sapphires, and gold to help them. Though his statue became ugly and blind, his heart was full of joy because he served humanity. His noble sacrifice pleased God, who rewarded him with eternal happiness.

Why was Santosh sent to the local School?
Answer – Santosh Yadav was sent to the local village school because of the prevailing family and social customs. Although her parents were financially well-off and could afford better schools, it was the tradition in her family to send girls to nearby local schools only. Girls were generally not encouraged to receive higher or distant education. However, Santosh later challenged this custom and moved ahead to pursue higher education, showing her strong determination and independent thinking.
