Section – A (Unseen Comprehension)
1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : (10 Marks)
Reading books is better than watching television or mobile because it provides an active learning, an opportunity to think and imagine for learners while the latter is a passive one. Consequently, book readers can control the speed and the control of learning interval: they can stop to think freely if they want and continue their reading at any time.
In contrast television and mobile views can not control the rhythm of the process; they have to follow the program passively, lacking much free time of thinking. Watching too much of television can prevent, to some extent, the mental growth of children; many parents refuse to install cable TV in their houses because they are worried that their kid would become more passive and more stupid after watching too many programs.
In a word, active learning is cherished by the modern education and reading books can achieve this goal while watching television and mobiles cann’t. The knowledge in books greatly exceeds that in TV cassettes. Which type of a person was the beggar? (The Beggar)
Answer – In Anton Chekhov’s short story “The Beggar,” the beggar, named Lushkoff, is depicted as a disheartened and dishonest individual at the start. He presents himself as a former schoolteacher who has fallen on hard times, but it is later revealed that he was actually lying about his past.
Initially, Lushkoff lies about his circumstances, claiming to have been a teacher who lost his position due to false accusations. This deception is his way of eliciting sympathy and money from people. Lushkoff is in a state of despair and resignation. He is dirty, ragged, and has lost much of his self-respect, which is evident from his willingness to beg and lie. Despite his initial dishonesty and apparent lack of hope, Lushkoff shows the potential for change. This is demonstrated by his response to the kindness and tough love shown by Sergei, a well-off advocate, and Sergei’s cook, Olga. When Sergei offers him work chopping wood, Lushkoff reluctantly accepts. Lushkoff’s transformation begins when he starts working for Sergei. Although he initially pretends to chop wood and lets Olga do most of the work, the opportunity to work and the compassion shown by Olga ultimately lead to his rehabilitation. Over time, he stops drinking and starts taking responsibility for his life. By the end of the story, Lushkoff is a changed man. He becomes sober, gains employment as a notary, and expresses his gratitude to Sergei for his kindness and to Olga for her silent help. He acknowledges that it was Olga’s genuine concern and assistance that played a crucial role in his transformation.
