(a) Recently a Minister visited your school to inaugurate the new science block. As the editor of the school magazine, prepare a report of the function.

A new science block has been inaugurated by Honorable Minister Mr Shafeeq Zaidi. He is the current R&D minister. He also holds work experience of working CSIR labs and DRDO.

The inauguration speech motivated the science enthusiasts of our school. It was evident by winning of National Science Olympiad by 4 members of the science block.

The new science block has specific facilities for astronomy lovers and microbiologists. Our Principal also looks forward to the success of the members and increased interest in science. 

 

(b) Write a report on the “Cleanliless Week” organized by your School recently. 

Ans. 

A cleanliness week was organised in our school under the title ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ from November 16-22 to create awareness among students about cleanliness. During the first two days the students went from door to door in the village and motivated the villagers to keep their surrounding clean. Dusbins were put at different points in the streets and people were requested to use them. Dusbins were also put in every room and student took oath to keep the school clean. On third day slogan writing, poster making and essay writing competition were held in which all the students took part. On fourth day a debate on cleanliness was held. The teachers of our school helped the students. The last two days were given to students to clean and decorate their rooms. The students of tenth class bagged first position in class decoration competition. At the end of this celebration ; our Principal thanked all the students and the teachers.

4. Attempt any one of the following : 

What impression do you form of M. Hamel on the basis of your study of the story “The Last Lesson”. 

Ans. M. Hamel is an experienced teacher who has been teaching in that village school for forty years. He imparts primary education in all subjects. He is a hard task master and students like Franz, who are not good learners, are in great dread of being scolded by him.

The latest order of the Prussian conquerors upsets him. He has to leave the place for ever and feels heart broken. He feels sad but exercises self-control. He has the courage to hear every lesson to the last.

His performance during the last lesson is exemplary. He is kind even to a late comer like Franz. He uses a solemn and gentle tone while addressing the students. He has a logical mind and can analyse problems and deduce the reasons responsible for it. The problem for Alsace is that he (the district) puts off learning till tomorrow.

He knows the emotional hold of a language over its users. He is a good communicator and explains everything patiently. Partings are painful and being human, M. Hamel too is no exception. He fails to say goodbye as his throat is choked. On the whole, he is a patriotic gentleman.

What efforts did Douglas make to overcome his fear of water ? When and how did he conquer it ? 

Ans. As Douglas realised that he had to overcome his fear of water, he decided to get an instructor and learn how to swim. The instructor made him practice bit by bit for several days. He was taught how to be able to breathe in water and then gradually how to use his legs for swimming. After many months of practice and hard labour, his tension began to slack. Douglas became a swimmer piece by piece and when each piece was perfected, these were put together in an integrated whole leading him to lose his fear of water. But he did not stop here. To avoid his old fear from returning, he swam alone in the pool and went to lake Wentworth to dive and tried every possible stroke learnt there. Finally, in his diving expedition in Warm Lake, he realised that he had conquered his fear.

 

5. Answer any two of the following in about 20 words each :  

(i) Why did the Crofter show thirty kronovs to the rattrap peddler ? 

Ans. The crofter shows the thirty kronor to the peddler which is received a payment in a last month by selling a cow’s milk. The crofter was an old man who was living alone in his cottage on the roadside and happy to get someone to talk in his loneliness by sharing all secrets and shows that he earned thirty kronor by supplying  a cow’s milk. He told him of his cow that supported him now and he received thirty kronor in payment last month to the peddler.

 

(ii) How did Gandhiji make the peasants fearless and self-reliant ? 

Ans. Gandhi made the peasants fearless by letting them know about their rights, fighting their case and by obtaining the refund of compensation made to the British landlords who were behaving as lords above the law. He follows the principle of non-violence and truth.  He went to jail many times. 

 

(iii) Who was Mukesh ? What was his aim of life ? 

Ans. Mukesh was the member of the bangle seller family in Firozabad. In his family, all were engaged in the family business of bangle making. The family lived in a half-built huts and stinky lanes. When Mukesh was asked about his aspirations in life, he said that “I will be a motor mechanic. I will learn to drive a car.” It can be noted that he wanted to be his own master and do a job of his choice in his life.

 

6. Answer any two of the following questions in about 50 words each :

(i) What is the main idea of the poem “My Mother at Sixty-Six” ?

Ans. The central idea of the poem ‘My Mother at Sixty-six’ composed by Kamala Das is that –

This poem shows the fear of losing her mother of the poetess. Her mother is in the last phase of her life. So the poetess feels that she will pass away soon. Poetess gets scared of this thought. To come out of this negative thought, she looked outside of car. The world outside was full of life and activity. The young trees seemed running fast. Children looked very happy. At the airport, they had to undergo a security check. The poetess was standing a few yards away from her mother. She looked again at her old mother. She felt pained to look at the colourless and pale face of her mother. But hiding her tears, the poetess said, “See you soon Amma”.

 

(ii) Does the poet of “Keeping Quiet” advocate total inactivity and death ? What is your opinion ? 

Ans. No, the poet does not say this at all. Whatever he says is connected with life and activities that can be made better. he only says that we should stop our activities for a few moments and have quite introspection. It will help us to restart our activities in a better and purposeful manner.

 

(iii) Where and how was the road side stand built and why ? 

Ans. The villagers living near the roadside extended an old house with a little shed. In the front, on one side, a road side stand was set up. Thousands of polished people in their cars passed that road. The owners who set up the stand, went on waiting for the city customers to purchase common items from them. They expected some money from them by selling their items. It will help in their progress. They did not want any dole of bread from them.

7. Answer any one of the following in about 100 words each :  

How did Mr. Lamb’s meeting with Derry become a turning point in Derry’s life ? 

Ans. Mr. Lamb was a worldly wise man though one of his legs was blown off in the war. He welcomes Derry in his garden. During their talks, Derry finds him a decent fellow. The children called him ‘Lamey Lamb’ but he allowed them to enter his garden without any irritation.

Lamb told Derry how to overcome his physical deformity. Lamb called him blessed because he had got two arms, two legs, ears, eyes, a brain and a tongue except the burnt face. Lamb also narrates him a story of ‘The Beauty and the Beast.’ He also told Derry many points how to get on with the world inspite of physical disability. In this way, Mr. Lamb tries to give courage and confidence to Derry.

Ans. Evans was a ‘jail bird, and the prison officers called him “Evans the Break” since he had escaped from the prison three times. He looked ‘scruffy’ and unshaven. He wore a filthy looking red and white bobble hat on his head. He had a heavy Scottish accent. He was exceptionally cunning. He was a quite pleasant type of personality who used to participate in various functions. He used imitations and was the star of Christmas concerts. He had no record of violence. He was very crafty, strategic and a deceitful type of fellow who very meticulously arranged his escape from the prison. He didn’t have violent nature but he had a disease called congenital kleptomaniac which means he used to steal things due to this disease. He was very good in mimic the person.

 

8. Answer any three of the following in about 20 words each :   

(i) Why did servants leave Dr. Sadao’s house ?

Ans. They left Dr, Sadao’s house because they felt that the doctors had an inclination towards Americans and didn’t felt them as his enemies, even though this was far from truth.

 

(ii) What had Jack been doing for nearly two years ?

Ans. Jack were telling testimonies or stories to Jo for 2 years. But he observed that of overdue there has been a alternate in his daughter in comparison to the past.
