15. CASE STUDY : Cells that have membrane bound nuclei are called eukaryotic whereas cells that lack a membrane bound nucleus are prokaryotic. In both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, a semi- fluid matrix called cytoplasm occupies the volume of the cell. The cytoplasm is the main arena of cellular activities in both the plant and animal cells. Various chemical reactions occur in it to keep the cell in the ‘living state’. Besides the nucleus, the eukaryotic cells have other membrane bound distinct structures called organelles like the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the golgi complex, lysosomes, mitochondria, microbodies and vacuoles. The prokaryotic cells lack such membrane bound organelles.

16. Write down the functions of Endoplasmic Reticulum.
Answer – Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is a complex network of tubular membranes exclusively present in the cytoplasm of the eukaryotic cell. It comes in two forms: Rough ER (RER) and Smooth ER (SER).
The Endoplasmic Reticulum performs following functions :
• It is responsible for the production and secretion of steroid hormones.
• It is also responsible for the synthesis of essential lipids such as phospholipids and cholesterol.
•It is responsible for the metabolism of carbohydrates.
• It releases calcium ions, which are necessary for the nervous system and muscular system.
17. Explain with suitable examples different types of phyllotaxy.
Answer – The arrangement of leaves on the stem of a plant is called phyllotaxy.
Types of Phyllotaxy :
• Opposite Phyllotaxy – In this type of arrangement, a pair of leaves opposite to each other develops at each node of the stem. e.g. Guava
• Alternate Phyllotaxy – In this type of arrangement, only one single leaf develops at each node of the stem alternatively. e.g. Rose
• Whorled Phyllotaxy – In this type of arrangement, more than two leaves develop at each node of the stem to form a whorl of leaves. e.g. Sunflower
