(a) Write a paragraph on the topic : ‘My Visit To A Zoo’.
Ans. Last Tuesday, our school was closed. So my best friend Leena came to my house on that day. We decided to visit a nearby zoo with my mom. We got ready and reached zoo by around 9 a.m. We were very excited to see the animals as we both were very fond of animals.
My mom bought 3 tickets and then we entered the gate. There were several monkeys, various beautiful birds, different wild animals in the zoo. Lions were roaring very loudly. Deer were wandering freely. It was very beautiful to see all those.
It was a very thrilling experience and a memorable one.
(b) Write a story on the title : ‘The Fox And The Grapes’.
Ans. One afternoon a fox was walking through the forest and spotted a bunch of grapes hanging from over a lofty branch.
“Just the thing to quench my thirst,” he thought. Taking a few steps back, the fox jumped and just missed the hanging grapes. Again the fox took a few paces back and tried to reach them but still failed.
Finally, giving up, the fox turned up his nose and said, “They’re probably sour anyway,” and proceeded to walk away.
Moral : It’s easy to despise what you cannot have. Nothing comes easy without a hard work. So, Work Hard and reach your goals.

Twenty-five students of X class S.D. Sr. Sec. School, Bhiwani went on a trekking tour to Manali in the winter break. The trip was organised by the Director of Mountaineering for the purpose of developing a spirit of adventure and thrill among the students. The students enjoyed this trekking tour a lot and learnt very much about mountains.

(3) Answer in about 100 words:
Write the story of Lencho’s faith in God. (A Letter to God)
Ans. Lencho has great faith in God. After the hailstorm destroyed his field, he wrote a letter to God asking a hundred pesos to show his field again and last till the crops came. When he received seventy pesos instead of a hundred pesos, he became angry. He thought that God neither could have a mistake nor he denied his request.Lencho thought that the post office employees must had taken the rest amount. Thus he wrote the second letter asking the rest of the money as he was an urgent need of that money and requested God not to posted him the money through post.
From the above points it was proved that Lencho had deep faith in God.

Write the character-sketch of Wanda Petronski. (The Hundred Dresses)
Ans. Wanda Petronski was a Polish immigrant. She was a socially outcast student who was often teased by the other students of the school and used to live in an impoverished area – Boggins Heights. Wanda used to wear the same faded, yet clean, blue dress to school each day. She sat in the last seat in the last row of her classroom, amidst the troublemakers, and was generally ignored by her teacher and by her fellow students. She was a very serene girl who laughed very rarely. She was very talented, skilled and patient.
(4) Answer the following questions :
(i) Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho ? Why does he sign the letter ‘God’ ? (A Letter to God)
Ans. The postmaster sent money to Lencho, to keep alive the trust of Lencho in God. As he read Lencho’s letter he grew serious and wished he had the same faith in God. Even after seeing that Lencho had asked for money, he stuck to his pledge to answer the message. He raised as much money as he was able to and sent it to Lencho. He signed it as God so as not to shake Lencho’s faith in him.
(ii) What ideals does Mandela set out for the future of South Africa ? (Nelson Mandela : Long Walk to Freedom)
Ans. Nelson Mandela set the ideals of liberating people from the bondage of poverty, suffering, and deprivation. He also set the ideals for a society where there would be no discrimination supported based on gender or racial origins.
(iii) What made the woman in the control centre look at the narrator strangely ? (The Black Aeroplane)
Ans. The woman in the Control Centre looked at the narrator strangely because the narrator asked her about the black aeroplane but she saw no plane except the narrator’s plane in the sky during the storm. Even the radar showed only the narrator’s plane in the sky that night.
(iv) Why was Mr. Keesing annoyed with Anne ? What did he ask her to do ? (from the Diary of Anne Frank)
Ans. Keesing was annoyed with Anne because she was very talkative and this distracted everybody in the class. He assigned her extra homework asking her to write an essay on the subject ‘A Chatterbox’.
(v) Why didn’t Valli want to go to the stall and have a drink ? What does this tell you about her ? (Madam Rides the Bus)
Ans. Valli didn’t want to go to the stall and have a drink because she didn’t have money for it. She even tried to refuse the offer of a treat by the conductor. This tells us that she was a wise girl and had self-control on her feelings.
(vi) When her son dies, Kisa Gotami goes from house to house. What does she ask for ? Does she get it ? Why not ? (The Sermon at Benares)
Ans. When Kisa Gotami’s son died, she went from house to house, asking if she could get some medicine that would cure her child. No, she did not get it because her child was dead and no medicine could have brought him back to life.
(vii) Who is the heroine of the play ? Explain. (The Proposal)
Ans. Natalya is the heroine of the play The Proposal. She is twenty-five years old. She is still unmarried. It causes great worry to her father. Natalya wishes that somebody should love her and propose to her. Her father calls her ‘a love-sick cat’.

(5) Answer the following questions :
(i) What is the central idea of the poem ‘Dust of Snow’ ?
Ans. The poem expresses the significance of small things in changing one’s attitude. The poet appreciates the beauty of the snowflakes, which changed his mood and saved many precious moments from being wasted away. The crow shakes off the snow dust from the hemlock tree.
(ii) What is the central idea of the poem ‘A Tiger in the Zoo’ ?
Ans. In this poem, the poet is trying to contrast a tiger in the zoo with the tiger in its real natural habitat. In order to show the contradiction the poet shifts the scene from the jungle to the zoo.
(iii) What does “in the world of possessions” mean in the poem “The Ball Poem’ ?
Ans. “In the world of possessions” means that the world is full of materialistic things. Here everything and every action are made to possess something, whether it is the possession of land, property, money, or any other thing. The poet suggests that losing a ball, which is a very small thing, would make the boy understand what it is like to lose something that one possessed.
(iv) What were the names of Belinda’s pets ?
Ans. The names of Belinda’s pets were Ink, a little black kitten; Mustard, a little yellow dog: Blink, a little grey mouse and a dragon whose name was Custard.

Write the character-sketch of Tricki on the basis of your understanding of the lesson ‘A Triumph of Surgery’.
Ans. Tricki was a small dog. His rich mistress pampered him. She loved him like his son. He was given princely luxuries. He had the number of beds, clothes, bowls for different occasions. Due to overfeeding by his mistress he became ugly and fatty. So her mistress took home to a vet. The vet knows the tricki real problem. He knows that Mrs. Pumphrey will not stop overfeeding tricki. Therefore out of concern, he took the dog. Mrs. Pumphrey fed him all favorite dishes. This overindulgence made tricki fat and lazy. He lost all energy. Dr. Herriot took interest in him and asked his mistress to cut down on sweet things. He was very greedy. He was fond of cream, cakes, and chocolates. He was not given plenty of exercises. A whole wardrobe was full of his clothing.
His mistress got upset when Tricki left eating, going for walks and doing anything. His mistress bewailed when he was taken to the hospital. He had no energy left. Dr. Herriot took a personal interest in him. He was only given plenty of water for two days. He regained energy and showed interest in other dogs. He enjoyed playing in their company. His mistress sent eggs and wine for him. They built him up and enriched his blood. He licked his mistress’s face when he was taken back home. He was a kind, sensible and grateful dog.

Describe the scene when Mr. Jaffers tries to arrest “a man without a head”. (Foot prints Without Feet)
Ans. The constable, Mr Jaffers was quite surprised to find that he had to arrest a man without a head. But, Mr Jaffers never gave up so easily. To him, if a magistrate’s warrant ordered a person’s arrest, then that person had to be arrested, with or without his head.
He tried to get hold of a man who was becoming more and more invisible as he threw off one garment after another. When Griffin had taken off all his clothes, the constable found himself struggling with someone he could not see at all. The constable was knocked unconscious in the end.
(7) Answer the following questions :
(i) Why is Mrs. Pumphrey worried about Tricki ? (A Triumph of Surgery)
Ans. Mrs. Pumphrey is worried about Tricki because he is unwell. He has refused to eat food and had bouts of vomiting. She feels that he is suffering from a serious health issue such as malnutrition.
(ii) Why was Griffin wandering in the streets ? (Footprints without Feet)
Ans. The Invisible Man was wandering in the streets because he had Set Fire to his landlord’s house and became homeless. To escape being caught he took off his clothes and became Invisible. Griffin was a scientist. He discovered a rare drug.
(iii) What lesson does Ebright learn when he does not win anything at a science fair ? (The Making of a Scientist)
Ans. When Richard Ebright did not win anything at the science fair, he realized that the winners had tried to conduct real experiments. He, on the other hand, had simply made a neat display. He had shown slides of frog tissues under a microscope.
(iv) Why was Matilda Loisel always unhappy ? (The Necklace)
Ans. Matilda was always unhappy in her early married life because she was born in a family of clerks which seemed to be an error of destiny. She had high aspirations. She felt grieved at her miserable condition. She thought that she was born for all delicacies and luxuries of the world.
(v) Who is Lutkins ? (The Hack Driver)
Ans. Lutkins, a resident of New Mullion, is a witness in a law case. He is a clever man as he easily takes the lawyer into confidence and shows him all around the town with a fake intention of helping him find Oliver Lutkins. He is a middle aged, friendly hack driver.
